Winnti hacking group targets online game industry

Winnti hacking group targets online game industryAccording to a report from Kaspersky Lab, a hacking group called Winnti has been targeting online game companies for years in order to steal source code and legitimate digital certificates for software. Kaspersky senior security researcher Kurt Baumgartner told Polygon that the Winnti trojan horse has infected more than 30 online game companies in Southeast Asia and game publishers worldwide.

In Kaspersky’s report, the trojan was first detected in fall 2011 on a large number of computers used by players of an undisclosed online game. Symantec named the trojan “Winnti” and that name was later used to identify the group behind the attacks.

According to Kaspersky, the group’s standard operations involve taking digital certificates and using them to sign malware to attack other targets. The security company believes the certificates are then used by a hacking group based in China, or sold on the Chinese black market.

“It seems like the goal of the attackers is to focus on the gaming companies, steal their digital certificates and maintain their stealth,” Baumgartner told Polygon. “We haven’t seen them going after the end user. Instead they are harvesting these digital certificates.”

Hacking the Oculus Rift: the Oculight

Our Oculus Rift finally arrived in the mail. I’ll spare you my thoughts on the item itself other than to say it is amazing. There are tons of videos to choose from that show people’s thoughts and reactions, and Ifixit has their usual detailed teardown as well.

The mod I decided to tackle first was the horizontal peripheral vision lights. The shape of the Oculus means that it feels like you are wearing a skii mask, or diving mask. There are big black borders at the far edges of the sides. It would seem that a simple mod would be to add some RGB LEDs and run a simple ambilight clone.

I downloaded the Adalight code and plugged in an RGB LED strip I had sitting around. The rift has some mesh areas at the 4 corners to allow air to move around in there. I took advantage of this so I didn’t even have to cut into the rift… yet. I simply strapped the strip to the rift with the proper LEDs shining through the holes.

The result was decent. Since the LEDs are further back in your peripheral vision than the edge of the screen, it looks like maybe a little light from the surroundings is just “leaking” into the headset. It gives the impression of seeing things that are far beyond the edge of the screen.  A better installation, allowing lights all the way up the left and right sides instead of just the corners might yield even better results.

U.S. and China announce cybersecurity collaboration amid hacking dispute

johnkerry-afp

China and the US, which are embroiled in a bitter dispute over hacking, have agreed to set up a cybersecurity working group, US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Saturday.

“All of us, every nation, has an interest in protecting its people, protecting its rights, protecting its infrastructure,” he told reporters on a visit to Beijing.

“Cybersecurity affects everybody,” he said. “It affects airplanes in the sky, trains on their tracks, it affects the flow of water through dams, it affects transportation networks, power plants, it affects the financial sector, banks, financial transactions.

“So we are going to work immediately on an accelerated basis on cyber.”

The world’s two largest economies have traded accusations this year over cyber-attacks after a US research company said in February that a Chinese army unit had stolen huge amounts of data, from mostly US companies.

China dismissed the report as “groundless”, saying its defence ministry websites were often subjected to hacking attacks originating in the US.

The American Chamber of Commerce in China also said late last month that over a quarter of its members have experienced data theft.

Activists launch week of protest against anti-hacking law

Digital liberties activists are ginning up support for their efforts to reform a law that they say could potentially turns millions of Americans into criminals.

Advocacy groups Demand Progress and the Internet Defense League (IDL) — a loose coalition that includes Mozilla, WordPress, Reddit, Public Knowledge and many other companies and organizations — announced the launch of a “week of action” Monday.

The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1984 was first enacted to reduce hacking into U.S. government computers and the computers of financial institutions. Unauthorized access to computers affecting interstate or foreign commerce and communication are also governed by the law.

The law is problematic to activists and analysts, however, because of how broadly the law can be interpreted by law enforcement.

Various actions that might be considered innocent by every day citizens — such as sharing social media passwords with friends, starting a pseudonymous social media profile, “exaggerating one’s height on a dating site” and visiting sites with age restrictions while underage — could technically be in violation of the law.

Anonymous launches coordinated cyberattack on Israel

APHackers launched a coordinated cyberattack on Israel over the weekend in an attempt to “wipe Israel off the map of the Internet,” defacing some 20,000 Israeli Facebook accounts and nearly 2,000 Israeli websites.

The anarchist hacking collective known as Anonymous formally launched “Operation Israel” on Sunday, the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day. The stated goal of the attack was to wreak havoc on Israeli servers, government websites, and Internet users.

The hackers penetrated and defaced multiple Israeli websites including government, schools, banks, and a website for children with cancer, according to regional media reports.

Among the government websites breached were the Central Bureau of Statistics, the Government Publications Office, the Haifa Sewage Treatment Plant, and the National Insurance Institute, which provides social security benefits to Israelis, according to a list of hacked websites posted on Hackers News Bulletin.

The hackers brought Israel-based web traffic to a crawl on Saturday and leaked the personal information of more than 1,700 Israeli credit card users, according to Hackers News Bulletin, which reported the Jewish state had lost some $2 billion as a result of the attack.

Hackers also attempted to penetrate the Jerusalem Post’s website as well as the site belonging to Yad Vashem, the Jerusalem-based Holocaust memorial museum.

The Jerusalem Post was able to repel the attacks but Yad Vashem was still recovering from a “fairly massive attack,” according to a Post report.

Anonymous also claims to have successfully hacked Israeli defense corporation Decell Inc., which contracts with the country’s Ministry of Defense and its intelligence agencies, according to Cryptome.

“It is our pleasure to announce that we have managed to hack Decell servers, acquiring some highly sensitive information, including exact GPS coordinates of every city, highway, streets, and of course every sensitive buildings located within Israel boarders!” Anonymous said in a statement posted on Cryptome.

The hackers are threatening to release the data in order to help Hamas terrorists and other jihadists attack Israel.

“We are asking every Zionist around the world to pay careful attention to the following statement,” Anonymous wrote.

“You have a choice to make, either stop murdering civilians, women and children, stop mass-killing Palestinians, stop stealing Palestinians [sic] land or else we will publish more of what we have got, including coordinates of special buildings!”

“Then Hamas missiles wouldn’t land in desert or ocean this time,” the statement read.

The hacking group Parastoo also joined the fray on Saturday when it threatened all users of iDirect.net, a satellite communications company.

Parastoo, which has hacked the U.S. Department of Energy and other government entities, condemned iDirect’s work with the American government in a statement posted on Cryptome.
